How much does an emergency locksmith cost in London?
The price depends on the time you call, the lock fitted and whether you need entry, a repair or a replacement. The most useful figure is the complete cost of solving your problem—not just an advertised starting price.
Send your postcode, a description of the problem and a photo of the lock if safe to do so. Ask for current availability and an estimated arrival time.
Quick answer: The Master Locksmiths Association’s guide lists London labour from approximately £95 per hour, out-of-hours emergency labour from £122 per hour and after-midnight labour from £153 per hour. These are indicative starting rates; replacement parts and other applicable charges can increase the bill.

London emergency locksmith price benchmarks
An hourly rate and a fixed job quote describe different things. If a company charges by the hour, ask about its minimum charge and how additional time is billed. A fixed job quote should specify the work and parts it covers.
| When you need help | Published starting labour rate | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Normal working hours | From £95 per hour | Minimum charge and whether the job is priced hourly |
| Out-of-hours emergency | From £122 per hour | When the evening rate starts |
| After midnight | From £153 per hour | Parts, VAT and any attendance fee |

What makes up an emergency locksmith bill?
A useful quote separates the work required from any replacement hardware. Opening a door with a working lock is a different job from opening it and fitting a new lock afterwards.
Attendance and labour
Check whether there is a separate attendance charge, whether initial labour is included and whether the price covers opening one lock or more. Ask what happens if you cancel before the technician arrives.
Parts and additional work
If a cylinder, lock case or mechanism needs replacing, ask which product is proposed and whether fitting, testing and keys are included. Any additional work should be explained and priced before you agree.
VAT and the final amount payable
Ask for the final amount you will pay, including VAT where applicable. A quote of £120 excluding VAT would become £144 with 20% VAT; that is an arithmetic example, not a Vastora quote. A company that is not VAT registered should not add VAT.
A better comparison: Compare entry, labour, hardware, taxes and any other agreed charges together. A cheaper attendance fee can still lead to a higher total if the rest of the work is priced separately.
Why the type of lock and door matters
A closed door is not always a fully locked door
Tell the locksmith whether the door simply shut behind you or whether a key was used to lock it. Also explain if a key is inside the lock, has snapped or turns without operating the door. Those details help identify the likely work before anyone travels.
One lock, two locks or a multipoint system?
A timber front door may have a night latch and a separate mortice lock. If both are engaged, the assessment needs to account for both. On a uPVC or composite door, a cylinder problem can differ from a failed gearbox or a misaligned door. Replacing a cylinder will not necessarily resolve a problem elsewhere in the mechanism.
Security level and replacement hardware
A basic replacement and a higher-security product can differ in specification and price. Ask for the brand, model and security rating rather than accepting “high security” as the whole description. Where insurance requirements matter, check the wording of your policy before choosing replacement hardware.
Can the door be opened without replacing the lock?
Non-destructive entry may be possible, depending on the lock and its condition. It cannot be guaranteed remotely. If drilling or replacement is proposed, ask why it is necessary and what the complete cost will be before authorising it. A lockout alone does not prove that every fitted lock needs replacing.
Three situations with different pricing needs
These are illustrative scenarios to help you describe your problem, not claims about completed Vastora jobs.
1. Your door shut with the keys inside
The main request is access. Explain which locks were engaged and whether you can use the same keys once inside. Ask whether the estimate assumes the existing lock remains usable, and what would change that estimate.
2. Your keys are missing and you need a new cylinder
The request may include both entry and a security change. Ask for the opening cost and the replacement cost separately, then confirm the combined price. Mention if other doors use the same key so the locksmith can understand the wider security concern.
3. Your uPVC door will not unlock properly
Describe what the handle and key do. Do not force either if something is jammed. Diagnosis may reveal a cylinder issue, a mechanism fault or an alignment problem. Ask whether an initial assessment is chargeable and how a revised quote will be agreed if parts are required.
What to ask before booking an emergency locksmith
Use this short booking checklist to make the scope clear:
- What is the total estimated price for my described problem? Explain the door type, locks and symptoms first.
- Is this a fixed quote or an estimate? Ask which findings could change it.
- What does attendance include? Confirm minimum labour and additional time charges.
- Are parts and VAT included? Ask for the full amount payable.
- What happens if entry requires replacement? Agree that the reason and revised price will be explained first.
- Who will attend, and when? Confirm the business identity, availability and expected arrival time.
- Will I receive an itemised invoice? Keep written details of the agreed work and price.
A very low “from” price needs context: it might apply only to one element or a limited situation. Ask exactly what it covers. If the explanation is unclear or you feel pressured into unagreed work, pause and seek another quote when it is safe to do so.
For a non-urgent job, arranging a daytime appointment and comparing like-for-like quotes gives you more time to make a decision. For an urgent lockout, prioritise a safe place to wait and a clear agreement.
London details that help a locksmith quote accurately
Your postcode identifies the destination, but it may not describe the access route. Mention a communal entrance, concierge arrangements, a separate flat door, floor number or restricted parking. This is particularly useful when the locksmith needs to reach a flat through another locked entrance.
In central London, ask whether any travel or parking costs apply and whether they are already included. The postcode alone should not replace an assessment of the actual lock and work needed.
If you are locked out in W8, our Kensington locksmith page explains how to request local assistance. For practical steps while waiting, read what to do if you are locked out in Kensington .
Before sending photographs: Show the outside of the door and lock if safe. Avoid sharing a clear image of a key blade, access code or private paperwork. Do not climb through an unsafe window or attempt to force the door.
Emergency locksmith cost FAQs
Is the hourly rate the final price for a lockout?
No. The final price depends on how the job is charged, the work involved and whether parts or other charges apply. Ask for the complete quote or estimate, including VAT where applicable, before booking.
Does an emergency locksmith cost more at night?
Out-of-hours rates can be higher. Check the applicable rate for your booking time, including after midnight, weekends or bank holidays, rather than relying on a daytime advertised price.
Is a call-out fee the same as labour?
Not always. An attendance fee may cover travel only, or it may include some labour. Ask what the fee covers and what you would owe if no repair or opening takes place.
Will I need a new lock after being locked out?
Not necessarily. If suitable non-destructive entry is possible and the lock is working, it may remain usable. A damaged lock, destructive entry or concerns over missing keys can lead to a replacement recommendation.
Can a locksmith quote from a photograph?
A photo and a clear description can help produce an estimate. Some faults need an on-site assessment. Ask which assumptions the estimate uses and how any change in scope will be priced before work starts.
